Program 108:

“The Canadian”

All aboard for one of Canada’s proudest rail rides,
All-weather travel...
the VIA Rail Toronto-to-Vancouver express service. The Canadian travels each week from Toronto westward, gliding past the picturesque lakes of Ontario, racing through the prairie lands of middle Canada, and coming face-to-face with the majestic mountains near the town of Jasper, Alberta. The train stops here so passengers can tour this region of the Rockies. Then it’s on to the western terminus in British Columbia. The complete journey takes three days and offers three classes of service, two of which include luxury sleeping accommodations and first-class meals.
Sightseeing in luxury...

The Canadian lures train buffs and seasoned travelers who want to see a lot but don’t want to expend the energy of driving across the continent. Ride along with me to see why so many people can't wait for the chance to savor the rail journey. The Canadian runs several times each week, in both directions. As an example, the train departs Toronto at 9 a.m. Tuesday, arriving in Vancouver at 7:50 Friday morning. There are several double bedrooms on the train but try to get a cabin in the Park Car, usually at the back of the train. You are close to the bar, the dome area for better views, and the free snacks.
Travelers who are 60 or older are entitled to a 10 percent discount year-round on most fares. And inquire about special fares for seniors on The Canadian, especially Senior Companion Fares, which allow adults 60 and above traveling in Economy class to take a companion along FREE when one adult pays full fare. This bonus is in addition to the 10 percent senior discount.
Remember, prices are lower in winter and higher in summer. The train can also be much longer and more crowded in the high season.
